Wacky director "Dennis Dugan" is back after his extremely sleazy comedy "You don't mess with Zohan" with a milder though equally juvenile - Grown Ups. Its about a group of middle aged guys, who were part of a basketball team back in their school days. Their coach dies and they come together for his funeral and reminisce the good old days. But its not just about that; its about their families coming together and their children realizing that there is a world of fun outside the virtual world.
Grown Ups has a gang of comedians - from Adam Sandler, to Chris Rock, to Rob Schneider and it also has the gorgeous Salma Hayek. Performance wise everyone is decent. No one goes really over the top. Even Adam Sandler remains surprisingly measured in his histrionics.
Dennis Dugan has a problem. Even though he has a decent plot at hand, it seems he has this incurably juvenile itch to have cheesy comedy. Even though he refrains from going bonkers in certain scenes that need to be handled emotionally, his sense of humour generally leans below the belt for the guys and above it for the gals !!!
Also, the writing is devoid of any wit. Instead, its all juvenility. It has some extremely funny moments, but overall the comedy just falls flat on its face. Plus, there is nothing really refreshing about it at all. Its a formulaic comedy, meant for killing time.
So, if you really dont mind some offensive humour and you have time to kill, go ahead and watch Grown Ups for some Juvenile Timepass !
