So Ethan Hunt is given the task of recovering 3 nuclear bombs (if he chooses to accept it, ofcourse). A terrorist group is planning to acquire it and create havoc. If Ethan was half-intelligent he could have recovered them in the 2nd scene of the film, but then his brains lie between his legs; I mean distributed between them. He only likes to run! So he manages to lose the bombs and then keeps running, driving, biking, flying, jumping, swimming, helicoptering etc etc to diffuse them. Along the way he has to fight goons, tackle double agents, save 2 Exes, do jujitsu, parkour and age-defying (he is bloody 56 years old) stunts.
While the stunts make you go WOW because of the old-fashioned real, up-close and visceral style, there is much boredom because of the repetitiveness of it all. When will we move beyond simple plots of stolen bombs and terrorists. In the real-world Terrorists have found ingenious ways of delivering terror, but in these films it’s always the same shit. It’s predictable to the core. Plus, the writers make Abbas Mastan proud by giving a twist every 15 minutes. While the audience was utterly confused and bemused, I was half expecting Bobby Deol to make a surprise appearance. But then I guess, Henry Cavill was this film’s Bobby Deol!
If you are a fan of the franchise or Tom Cruise, this is a decent watch. But don’t go by the hype, it is not that good. So if you haven’t seen it yet, I suggest you go to watch the film only to see how a 56 year old man puts 20 year olds to shame. He certainly put me to shame. I am like “Waiter, give me what he is having. Except Scientology, ofcourse!”
