Despicable Me, is about a superbad Villian named GRU( Steve Carell), who is past his prime. He has had several ingenious ideas in the past, but has failed in most. He has an army of cute, yellow, bobbing minions and an old scientist Dr Nefario (Russell Brand), who comes up with all the freaky gizmos required for his conniving escapades. When a much younger villian named Vector (Jason Segel) steals GRU's thunder by stealing a Pyramid, GRU comes up with a plan to steal the Moon and establish his name as the Greatest Villian Ever! Little does he know that when he allows 3 cute girls into his house, they would steal his heart and mend his ways.
Despicable Me is more about the heart, than the wit. GRU hasn't had the best of childhoods. His Mom never appreciated his talents and probably that forced him into his wicked ways. He just wants to pull off the biggest coup ever by a villian so that his Mom appreciates him; inside he is an affectionate man. When 3 cute little girls come into his life, his paternal instincts suddenly appear. They distract him from his Evil Mission, to steal the moon, and force him to live a life of goodness. He finally starts getting the attention he always sought and this mends his ways.
Despicable Me, is top class on the animation front. You never get a feeling that this movie is not made in the "Pixar" or "Dreamworks" studio. The Characters are super and their dialogues are hillarious. The young supervillian Vector and Gru's mom (Julie Andrews) have been give some of the best punch lines. The Minions are super cute and provide the maximum laughs.
One of the best sequences is when GRU enters Vector's house to steal the "Shirk Gun" ! But there is one problem with Despicable me. The film is a little stretched out and the screenplay is not always engaging. It falls short in the Wit department and tries to milk the "CUTENESS" of the characters. A few more amazing sequences would have made this movie LEGENDARY ! Sadly it falls a little short.
But there are no 2 ways about it. This movie is a must see. 3-D is just an added advantage. And yeah, I just loved the title track :)
So venture out to see Despicable me, Or get a CD....coz this is largely a Lovable Movie ! (Minion Poetry :P )
Rating : 6.5 / 10
( For those who think Pixar/ Dreamworks rule the roost in animation in Hollywood- Check out "FANTASTIC MR.FOX" - 9 / 10 , a truly remarkable film by Twentieth Century Fox and Indian Paintbrush )
