The intentions were good, but the script is so weak that even 2 SRKs can't save it! What starts of as Mast@rb*tion i.e. It's all about lovin thyself, soon turns into Self-flagellation and you just want to scratch your face off.
SRK hasn't set a good precedent with Duplicate, but this one starts on a promising note. SRK as his duplicate fan is extremely effective. His Dilli Waala avatar quickly impresses you and you can relate to his craze. You connect to him as he sets off on a journey to meet his hero. You can feel his pain when he doesn't get to meet his hero and you feel a little sad for him when he is beaten up for being an over-bearing fan. The first half sets the movie up beautifully. The real life shots from SRK's well-documented life, add to the authenticity of the plot. But the good news ends with the first half.
The 2nd half is not just bad, it is atrocious. Unrealistic situations, dumb chases, extremely bad CG, the ever changing face of the Fan make it impossible for you to believe anything that is happening. The bond you had made with Gaurav in the first half, quickly breaks and you just want him to die! Which he does, eventually... thankfully! Well, now don't fret that I gave away a spoiler.. just be happy that there is hope!
Is it a good attempt from SRK? Yes, it is. But you can be sure that he will not experiment any more in his career. And, should you watch it? Well, only if you want to contribute to SRK's retirement fund. Otherwise just watch it on your laptop, so that you can fast forward it whenever you want. Because pehle half main toh yeh film deta hai khushi, but in the 2nd half you wanna do khud khushi!
