“Knight and Day” is one of those weird films that neither falls into the category of action nor romance nor comedy, even though it tries to be all three. It’s a confused film, which ends up to be an extremely ordinary one.
So Cameron Diaz is the innocent, gullible dame who gets entangled in a non stop battle between Tom Cruise, FBI and the the bad guys. Tom Cruise is Mr.Invinsible, who is not only protecting an extraordinary invention, but also it's inventor. The problem is, even though he is himself an FBI agent, he is considered to be a rogue one and both the FBI and the bad guys go behind him. Hence starts a series of action set pieces and romantic interludes.
The problem with the movie is the ridiculously juvenile story. The intentions of the movie are unknown. It seems it just wanted to bank of Cruise and Diaz’s chemistry. Unfortunately, the film has nothing endearing about it. The performances are just about ok, as both Cruise and Diaz do not have to try too hard. Plus the characters seem to be loosely written, so even the charisma of Cruise and Diaz can’t pull it off. The action set pieces are executed well, but they do not seem to be anything new. They fail to really get your adrenalin pumping. Also, they are pretty unbelievable as machine guns keep missing our protagonists from as close as 2 feet away ! All this, under the garb of comedy !
Tom Cruise and Diaz have a little bit off chemistry going between them, but they do not exactly set the screen on fire. It’s just about ok. Cruise needs to really pull up his socks and get a brilliant movie, else he would soon become extinct.
I suggest you give this movie a skip, as its one of those films which would be worth watching on TV when you are damn bored and have nothing else to do ! This movie is definitely ordinary and just stops short of being a Knightmare ..
