Phans Gaya Re Obama is once again a small budget witty film that worked. A little because it deserved it, and a little because of the paucity of good films.
Subhash Kapoor, another new director who grabbed hold of an issue, a novel script, some good actors and wallah! The film is about Recession and its effect across the world. Rajat Kapoor, an NRI, comes to India and is kidnapped by poor Gangs who themselves are stricken by the recession. Little do they know that Rajat Kapoor himself is suffering heavily in the U.S. And when they do realize their misfortune, the gangs start finding ways to make good of the situation.
In terms of the script, its semi-solid. The "Line" is excellent, the characters are solid, some scenes are hilarious, but the ride is bumpy. There are times, when the story seems stretched out. But overall its more than a decent effort.
The acting overall is excellent. The mixed ensemble do an excellent job. Rajat Kapoor is as dependable as ever. Sanjay Mishra as Bhai Saab is excellent. Amol Gupte and Neha Dhupia are alright, but the cherry on the cake goes to Manu Rishi playing Anni who steals the show with his excellent timing and performance.
The satire is solid, the message is firm, but does lack that extra zing. Anyways, a much much better fare than the stinking stuff engulfing theater nowadays. Do catch it sometime, if you can. A must watch at least on TV.
