Source Code has a staggering 90% rating on Rottentomatoes and suddenly my faith in it has plummeted. But then again, I am the guy who failed to understand what was so mind-boggling about "Inception"!!! Now, dont get me wrong. Inception was much much better than this film. Source Code is really 8 minutes of tape rewound again and again to get to the finale! And its not very easy to sit through its 93 minutes length.
The concept of Source Code is a bit like Time Travel but not exactly. So, Captain Colter (Jake Gyllenhaal) finds himself in an experiment that takes him into the body of person in a train which was blown up sometime ago! ok, that doesnt make sense, but his mission is to find the person who planted the bomb in the train. There are other twists to it, but I wont disclose them. So, this experiment lasts 8 minutes and in those 8 minutes he has to find the bomber. The movie keeps looping until finally, he finds the person.
I understand the science behind it, but I fail to understand the logic! You keep seeing the same thing again and again and again with minor twists. The problem with the movie is that it fails to connect to you and you keep skimming the surface. Jake is in a tough situation, but you fail to understand why he cares so much or why he falls in love with a person he has met some 15 times * 8 minutes, even though she keeps saying the same thing! Also, in this who-dunnit saga, the process of finding the bomber, is tedious and boring. And, when he goes into the source code for the nth time, you know what's going to happen and well, it all seems too predictable. The film does not end with a bang, just a question mark.
Seriously, yeh picture kuch hajam nahi hui. The script is good enough to be made into a short film for TV, but not a full fledged movie. The background score is good, but finally the movie failed for me. See if it works for you. Even Russel Peter's failed to make me laugh! oh yeah. Thats a twist for you. Russel is in the film :)
